Dick Gregory: Health is a Revolutionary Act

June 16, 2020 by Julia Leave a Comment

Dick Gregory (1969) - "Being healthy is a revolutionary act."

In 1980, Dick Gregory’s Harvard speech changed my life. Gregory was a brilliant comedian, civil rights advocate, and organic food pioneer.

“Being healthy is a revolutionary act,” he said. “Changing the world begins with healing your body, and freeing yourself from any substance that alters your mind: sugar, drugs, alcohol, junk food! You cannot be free if you’re taking medication every day, due to an illness or disease that you can heal with your own two hands … and fresh food from the garden!”

Dick Gregory spoke to me. I had just thrown away my inhaler as well as my drugs for rheumatoid arthritis, colitis, and bleeding ulcers. Despite doctors telling me I needed medication for life, Dick Gregory’s words emboldened me to pursue “food as my medicine.” I trusted my body to heal. And it did!

Health food trailblazers, Paul and Patricia Bragg mentored Dick Gregory. In addition, Gregory lost 100 pounds employing the Bragg program of fresh fruits and vegetables. As a result, Gregory dedicated himself to spreading: “health is your wealth.”

Gregory believed eating fresh food is a statement of independence. Therefore, he supported community gardens. In the 1960s and 1970s, Gregory controversially called soul food a “slave diet.” “Fried food is dead food! The brains and bodies of free men and women thrive on organic, fresh food!”

Furthermore, Gregory was an early devotee of veganism. His book, Dick Gregory’s Natural Diet For Folks Who Eat, is a humorous and informative guide that upgraded the dietary habits of an entire generation.
