Nichol Granito Life Coach, and gut-friendly food expert

A life coach and expert on gut health and kidney issues, Nicole Granito has fiercely battled autoimmune disease for decades. She defied the odds against her doctor’s predictions that she would not survive. We are lucky she did. I am grateful for her support as moderator on TikTok and YouTube live calls. However, her passion for gut health, food, researching, and gardening on the new Happy Gut Tribe Facebook is where Nicole really shines.

Value of Colostrum as a Gut-Friendly Food

Colostrum is a nutrient-dense fluid released from the breast of mammals. This special elixir comes just after giving birth to provide nourishment and powerful nutrients to their young.

All female mammals, including humans, produce colostrum in the days following birth. Colostrum provides newborns with nutrients that help strengthen their delicate immune system. They include protein, essential fatty acids,  antioxidants and antibodies.

Studies show some promise with colostrum in areas such as immune function and gut health. Those who have used it, including Happy Gut Tribe members report reduced inflammation, stronger nails, and hair growth.

Reports show colostrum may improve gut permeability, and support healthy gut microbiome. Reducing gut inflammation can be beneficial for conditions like Crohn’s Disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Colostrum may help reduce gut “leakiness” preventing passage of substances from the gut to the bloodstream. Since we (tribe members) suffer from gut issues, most willingly have removed cow’s milk, since milk is likely inflammatory, even if a person is not specifically lactose intolerant.

Best Ways to Consume Colostrum for Complete Benefits

Goat milk is an ideal replacement for cow’s milk. And, goat milk is a gut-friendly match for Colostrum. The colostrum I researched is Mt. Capra, and I’ve included the labels above. Please understand that Mt. Capra is offered in capsule form. They can be opened and the powdery supplement can be added to All Day Energy protein drink or Julia’s popular Protein Power. I like to add it to either of Julia’s protein shakes. After speaking with Mt. Capra, I have learned more about colostrum. If you like to open up capsule and add the powder to a drink or shake, consider purchasing goat milk colostrum in powder form.

Protein Power Overview

Be aware that the makers grind it five times finer for the powder form. So, if you add the contents of a regular capsule to your drink, that drink will be gritty; and you will feel an unpleasant texture in your shakes. In addition, they do not recommend putting the powder Into a hot drink. For other questions, feel free to comment on the Facebook page *Happy Gut Tribe Facebook page. However,  if we do not know the answer, we will research and reply.
NOTE: Mt. Capra is the company, and the product name is Goat Milk Colostrum—gluten-free. lactose free, and vegetarian. Learn even more at their website.

Coconut Yogurt, a Super Gut-Friendly Food

I am beginning to think that the more I research foods, the more I want to consume gut-friendly food. Today’s research is about coconut yogurt.

For all who are looking to reduce inflammation and build a healthy gut, coconut yogurt is a great addition to your diet. A heathy option for people with lactose intolerance, plus those needing a dairy-free alternative.

This yogurt is often a good source of probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria for gut health. Coconut yogurt provides vitamin A, vitamin B12, riboflavin, calcium, and healthy fats! Many of the probiotics in coconut yogurt can help improve digestion, reduce gut inflammation, and potentially improve the body’s ability to absorb nutrients.

Coconut yogurt includes less protein and calcium compared to dairy yogurt. However, as gut tribe members, we know how to get protein—and we don’t rely on yogurt or milk for our protein.

Minimizing dairy product consumption helps to reduce inflammation for a positive effect on your skin and vitality. Always keep in mind that whatever we put in our bodies must be organic.

After extensive research, chose Cocojune as winner of “best coconut yogurt!” This brand is creamy with amazing flavors. Each serving offers high numbers of live and active cultures. The runner-up is Harmless Harvest. I tried vanilla of this delicious, organic coconut yogurt. Enjoy this yogurt—hope you feel a difference.

Gut-Friendly Coffee, Easy on the Gut

Imagine this—coffee that goes easy on your stomach. Pangea Coffee is tasty, smooth, and delicious. If suffering from an inflamed belly, Pangea is for you.

Pangea is organic, low acid, and has been tested for allergies and mold. Plus, the coffee is smooth and not bitter tasting. Typically, according to a board-certified gastroenterologist, if you experience acid reflux, stick with light-medium roast coffee beans.

Dr Joseph Salhab, a GI specialist, considers Pangea Coffee beans to of be the highest quality. When you suffer from severe allergies which lead to stomach issues, it’s time to make changes. Start with coffee. I have bragged enough about Pangea to make their website crash. If you don’t still do not believe the improvement changing coffee can make, ask our founding tribe members, Allison and Haley. See their reviews at Pangea Coffee

Monk Fruit Extract—Sugar Option for Baking, Cooking, Sweetening

For the best sweetener we chose Purisure. Monk fruit extract is a natural zero-glycemic sugar option—tastes like sugar, but is safe. Use this sugar in baking and cooking. Unlike many brands of monk fruit sweeteners, Purisure contains zero erythritol.

Gut-Friendly Elixers for Gut Healing

During TikTok and YouTube live broadcasts (Sat/Sun@ 4pm PST) many tribe members ask Julia about her favorite bone broth. Well, here’s her answer. Butcher’s Blend Organic Chicken Bone Broth. This bone broth does not include onions or garlic–necessary to avoid if you have an inflammatory gut condition. Bone broth is not easy to find, however, Amazon is a great source. The other bone broths we recommend are Zoup and Imagine. If you find other bone broths without onion or garlic, please let us know.

Gluten-Free Sourdough Bread Alternative—Is it Worth it?

Many of us who haven’t completely given up bread yet, love sourdough. But what you may not know is that gluten-free is critical for preventing grain-related gut permeability.

Yes, many love the taste of sourdough bread, but if it’s going to harm us, how much can we really love it? I visited a few of our favorite food stores and here’s what I found.  None of Traders Joe’s sourdough breads were gluten-free; therefore I counted them out.

base culture selected sour dough gluten-free for gut-friendly food choices

Some sourdough breads are organic, yes, but does it matter if the wheat permeates the gut? Be sure the wheat is gluten-free.

Whole Foods Stores stocks one brand of gluten-free sourdough, called Base Culture Simply Sourdough Bread. which I purchased for about $9. Once at home, I tasted it; and wow was I disappointed! Perhaps, the best solution is to find a good sourdough bread recipe which can be made with gluten-free flour.

We have recently had requests for grain free recipes. We encourage you to use good, clean organic ingredients. Login to the Happy Gut Tribe Facebook page and let us know if you love them.

Gut-Friendly, Grain-Free Avocado Brownies

3/4 cup or 2 mashed avocado
2 eggs
1/2 cup coconut sugar
1/3 cup cocoa powder
5 Tablespoons coconut flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon lime juice
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/3 -1/2 cup chocolate chips

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Next, line a 9”x5” loaf pan with parchment paper. Add the ingredients to a food processor (except for chocolate chips) and process until completely smooth. Then, stir in the chocolate chips.

Next, transfer brownie batter to prepared loaf pan and spread into an even layer. Bake in pre-heated oven 20-30 minutes until top has set, forms cracks, and has reached desired done-ness. For ultra-fudgy brownies start checking them at 20 minutes.

Allow the brownies to cool completely before pulling the parchment paper out of the loaf pan and transferring to a cutting board. Cut and serve.

I am always on the hunt for gut-friendly recipes. We are looking for recipes with no seeds, nuts, and no corn. Recipes with no ground ingredients, not kernels, and not popcorn. Gluten-free. Lactose free. Sugar-free. Grain free. No spinach. No kale. Enjoy making and eating these brownies, I certainly do.
